Dr Jesús Ojeda

Jesús Javier Ojeda is a Lecturer in Surface Science at ETCbrunel. Jesús’ research interests include the detection, quantification and monitoring of the interactions between cells, soil, nanomaterials, pollutants and surfaces in complex media, and the use of state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques (such as imaging ToF-SIMS, micro-FTIR, ATR-FTIR, XPS, EXAFS, and potentiometry) to describe these systems. Jesús has developed a strong interest in assessing the importance of cell surface composition on adhesion, growth, chemical exchange, as well as the effects of environmental conditions (such as pH, nutrients or ionic strength) on biofilm formation.

Dr Ojeda completed his PhD in Surface Chemistry in 2009 at the Kroto Research Institute, University of Sheffield, studying the interactions between biological materials and surfaces using potentiometric and spectroscopic techniques. His undergraduate studies were made at the Department of Chemistry, Simon Bolivar University, Venezuela, where he gained a degree in Chemistry in 2000. Since 1998, he has been participating in research activities and then working full-time on surface characterisation, catalysis and analytical chemistry in the oil industry. In 2003, he became an Associate Specialist in Analytical Chemistry at Chemiconsult C.A. and in January 2004, he moved to the University of Sheffield in order to study sorption of organic pollutants in soils. In April 2005 he was appointed as a Research Associate in Spectroscopy at the Laboratories of Environmental Sciences, Kroto Research Institute, The University of Sheffield, and later was made responsible for the Institute’s Surface Analysis Centre (XPS and ToF-SIMS). In February 2010, he was appointed as a Lecturer in Surface Science at ETCbrunel.

Dr Ojeda’s research topics also include:

· Detection, quantification and monitoring of the interactions between cells, colloids and engineered nanomaterials in complex environmental media.

· Sorption and complexation of radionuclides by bacterial cell walls, and their potential application for the treatment of nuclear waste.

· Design and characterisation of coatings for the inhibition of bacterial growth, and biocompatible coatings for medical applications.

In addition to the above research topics, Jesús also provides expert consultancy services in Surface Sciences, as well as confidential analytical services to commercial clients using micro-FTIR spectroscopy (micro-FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).
